Isn't it great that we live in a country with no kings, queens, or dictators!! Where the peasants aren't punished with outrageous taxes.Where every child is nurtured, educated, and well cared for? Oh wait I forgot we do live in country where there is inequity in every facet of our lives!
I know I am feeling morbid and sarcastic today because I've been watching documentaries on netflix about what is really happening in America. And it makes me angry, or ultimately sad.

Ethos
Is Consumerism killing our planet?
I saw a documentary today called "Ethos". What is Ethos? On Wikipedia says, it "is a Greek word meaning "character" that is used to describe the guiding beliefs or ideals that characterize a community, nation, or ideology."
The Documentary shows how an elite group of people actually run the world and we, the people, let it continue through our continued dependence on on Consumerism. I'll be the first to admit I don't want to let go of my 'things' and every month I want to buy new things, not related at all to food. So I am a consumer. One of the worst offenders. But after seeing this and feeling terrible after Christmas, granted I didn't buy as much as many people, but my kids got so much stuff from me and their father's family. So I asked myself - Is this what Christmas is really about? What am I really teaching my children? That blindly buying things without regards to the consequences is ok? Don't worry there will be more resoucres for the next generation - somehow.
No, I can't say that is a lesson I want to pass on. I would like my children to know peace and a love and appreciation of the Earth for which they live, much like the Native Americans of this country. Most all Native American communities of the past shared all resources - growing, hunting, gathering, raising of the children. And if one person didn't have enough of something one of the community would give it to (no strings attached), because that's what you do when you are part of a community.
I feel one of the reasons Native Americans were mistreated so badly was because sharing in the community sounds a lot like socialism. And socialism, as we are all taught in school, is evil and must be stopped because it flies in the face of Capitalism. And America is and has always been a country of wealthy men who are Capitalists or businessmen. The bottom line - how much will I make? Is actually what our country was founded on and was built on the backs of minorities and before that slave labor because there were those who would make a fortune.
I digress, I would like to see our world change into a wonderful peaceful place where nature, and resources, are truly appreciated by our children and their children's children. I will continue to visualize this world to come.

Blogging as writing excercise
I'm taking a Creative Writing course and we are learning about writing on a regular basis. How good it is for anyone interested in improving their writing to write on a regular basis. I think that Facebook and blogging are good ways to stretch those writing muscles. So get out there and type!
On other news Book I of Kathirne and the Pirates is being edited right now and I have Book II more than half-way through! I am hoping to have that done by the January or February 2013.

Freedom of speech?
Recently came across a guys blog-post (obviously a guy), and he had many pics of famous women in various semi-nude poses to completely nude and many in X-rated poses. I have to wonder how other people, especially women feel about this?
Granted the pics are avaialble to anyone who types in the right search words into google, but what if I don't want to see that on a blog I like to read?What if I don't want my son, who's just turning 11 this week, to see them either? Blogger has even erected a warning that the blog may be objectionable to some people. Isn't that even enough to get the blog or the pics taken down?
I feel that anyone who looks at pics of women like that are not thinking of the women themselves and who they are. Only what they are and how much pleasure their pics can give a man (usually only men) for a few minutes. How sad is that? Or is it? I wonder if other's see this as rather pathetic too?

On Writing
Here's some tips for writers.
Tip 1: If you want to write a book, well you have to make yourself sit down and write it. Some people like to write it all at once. But let me tell you that most of us have to live in the world and then look for time to write. An hour here, 15 mins there, and pretty soon I've finished a chapter.
Tip 2: Don't worry how it looks or about all the grammar and misspelling, you can go back later and fix most of it real fast with spell-check!
Tip 3: If you want to be a good writer, I mean really good, you have to be a good reader. As I read a book from Stephen King on the topic he says he reads from every genre whenever he possibly can. And on this I have to agree. Read read and then read some more, especially in the genre that you want to write in.
Tip 4: Less of a tip and more of a motivational speech, but take it easy on yourself. We live hectic lives and if for some reason you don't finish writing or editing or don't begin when you wanted to, that's okay too. It's not the end of the world, so just keep on writing whenever you can.

Writing Contest
Hello, and thank you Patrica for sending me that info on a writing contest with Del Rey books. It's still available for anyone interested, until the 18th, I believe. So hurry with your submission. I'm planning on entering my novel, Kathrine and the Pirates, about the 1st 3 chapters. We'll see what happens, keep your fingers crossed.
I just added a new profile pic here. If you look at it closely you'll think of a very specific kind of place. Well, anyway it's where Kathrine and the Pirates Book II is headed in the book. Kind of a neat looking place. Wish I could go too! I'm enjoying writing up book II, with ideas swimming in my head for a Book III and IV already!
